Link: The Dilemma of Being a Cyborg
There’s a great Radiolab episode called Memory and Forgetting. In it, renown neuroscientist Yadeen Dudai suggests that it is the memory least recalled that is best preserved. “Intuitively, you think if you use a memory, you know better because you remember it better…but this is not what science shows. If you have a memory, the more you use it, the more you’re likely to change it.” Digital storage doesn’t replace memory. Recollection replaces memory by re-narrating our past. Of course, recollection is nothing new. What is new is the way technology plays a role in that process today. We need to spend less time lamenting the inevitable digitization of past experiences, and more time considering (and designing) how we aught to digitally experience the past. How can we take advantage of technology to narrate appropriate and constructive stories that inform who we are?
